From Hollywood to Santiago: How Keanu Reeves’ Stolen Watches Traveled 9,000 Miles to Chile

5 min read

In a story that reads like a movie plot itself, six luxury watches stolen from actor Keanu Reeves in Los Angeles have been recovered in Chile—nearly 9,000 kilometers away—and handed over to the FBI for return to their famous owner. The discovery has unveiled a complex web of international crime that spans from Hollywood Hills to the streets of Santiago.

A Detective’s Movie Knowledge Cracks the Case

The recovery of the stolen timepieces was entirely circumstantial, occurring during a routine police investigation into home burglaries in eastern Santiago. Chilean authorities were targeting a local criminal gang when they stumbled upon something extraordinary.

During a raid in the commune of Peñalolén, investigators found valuable items including watches, one bearing a distinctive inscription. It was then that fate—and pop culture knowledge—intervened.

“One of the detectives, who liked the John Wick film series, managed to recognize the item,” explained Deputy Prefect Marcelo Varas, head of the Robbery and Criminal Intervention Investigation Brigade of the Chilean Investigative Police. The detective had read about Reeves gifting personalized Rolex Submariners to his stunt crew, and the connection clicked.

The John Wick Connection: A Generous Gift Gone Wrong

The recovered watches have a touching backstory. In 2021, Keanu Reeves gifted Rolex Submariner watches to his entire stunt crew while working on “John Wick: Chapter 4.” Each watch was personally engraved with his name and the inscription: “Thank you, JW4, 2021, The John Wick Five.”

This generous gesture, meant to honor the dangerous work of his stunt doubles, inadvertently made the watches even more valuable to thieves due to their unique provenance and celebrity connection.

Life Imitating Art: The Ironic Parallel

The irony of the situation isn’t lost on anyone familiar with Reeves’ filmography. In the John Wick saga, his character is a former hitman seeking revenge after his home is burglarized and his beloved dog is killed. Now, in real life, the actor has become the victim of the very crime that drives his fictional character’s quest for vengeance.

This isn’t Reeves’ first brush with burglary either. In 2014, months before the first John Wick film’s release, Los Angeles police reported two break-ins at his home within three days, though no items were reported stolen during those incidents.

The Chilean Gang’s International Crime Spree

The investigation revealed disturbing details about the criminal organization responsible for bringing the watches to Chile. According to Deputy Prefect Varas, the gang initially operated locally in 2023 but evolved their operations internationally.

“Once they were fenced in and the case became widely reported due to the violence they used, some of these individuals migrated and began committing crimes abroad using the same modus operandi,” Varas explained.

The gang’s method was particularly ruthless: they sought to break into empty homes, but if they encountered residents, they would act violently.

Digital Evidence Links Chile to Hollywood

Chilean authorities uncovered compelling evidence connecting the local suspects to the Los Angeles robbery. On a seized cell phone belonging to one suspect, investigators found photos taken in the United States showing:

  • The stolen watch in question
  • A firearm
  • Keanu Reeves’ driver’s license

These images led investigators to believe the photos were taken during the actual burglary at Reeves’ home, providing a direct link between the Chilean gang and the Hollywood heist.

The $7 Million Heist and Its Aftermath

The 2023 robbery at Reeves’ home resulted in losses estimated at $7 million, according to Hugo Haeger, deputy director of Police and Criminal Investigation in Chile. The Rolex Submariner watches alone, while officially priced at over $10,000 each, could command much higher prices on the black market due to their celebrity provenance and unique engravings.

“Watches are a prized possession; there are people who dedicate themselves to collecting them,” Varas noted. “If it’s a brand, or a piece valued for being unique, or a famous actor’s, they want it even more.”

International Criminal Network Exposed

The investigation revealed the far-reaching tentacles of this criminal organization:

  • The Alleged Perpetrator’s Brother: Convicted of robbery with intimidation and customs fraud
  • One Gang Member: Died in a confrontation between rival criminal groups
  • Another Suspect: Traveled to the United States and continued committing crimes
  • A Fourth Member: Fled to Argentina, where he was arrested for home robberies in Buenos Aires

“Unfortunately, we export this type of crime, but we also provide information to law enforcement agencies,” Varas acknowledged.

How Stolen Goods Cross Borders

The case highlights sophisticated methods used by international criminals to transport stolen goods. Deputy Prefect Varas explained that gangs commonly use:

  • Parcel delivery systems
  • Tourists with clean criminal records as unwitting mules
  • Simple concealment methods, like wearing watches through airport security

“The watch could easily have passed through airport security on the wrist of a traveler who didn’t raise suspicions,” he noted.

The Visa Waiver Program Controversy

The case has reignited debate about Chile’s participation in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, which allows Chilean citizens to enter America without a visa for up to 90 days. Following similar crimes in Oakland County, Michigan, local Sheriff Mike Bouchard called for an end to Chile’s participation, describing the perpetrators as “extremely well-trained” criminals.

However, during a recent visit to Chile, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem took a more collaborative approach, signing a letter of intent to expand a Biometric Identification Transnational Migration Alert program. She emphasized that “Chile’s continued collaboration with our visa waiver program is invaluable to our country.”

Justice Served Across Continents

The successful recovery and return of the watches demonstrate the effectiveness of international law enforcement cooperation. Deputy legal attaché at the U.S. Embassy, Blaine Freestone, who will personally present the watches to Reeves, emphasized that “thanks to the ongoing cooperation with Chilean authorities, justice is being delivered to victims of transnational crimes.”

For Keanu Reeves, the recovery of these watches represents more than just the return of valuable property—they’re symbols of gratitude to the professionals who risk their lives to make his action sequences possible. That these tokens of appreciation found their way back to him through the dedicated work of international law enforcement seems fitting for an actor whose characters are often defined by their pursuit of justice.

The case serves as a reminder that in our increasingly connected world, crime knows no borders—but neither does the long arm of the law.
